Editing and Compiling whilst recording
One of the unique features of all SADiE systems is the ability to create 'profiles' (the waveforms you see on screen) whilst recording. With most other systems you will need to wait until the recording is finished, the waveform is created and then you can start editing; a significant amount of time being wasted. SADiE users of course have the competitive advantage not only by being able to see the waveform being drawn as the recording progresses, but actually being able to cut the clips, rename them, re-positioning them and so on. This means that you can have your voice-over or links roughly edited and positioned before the voice-over artist or presenter has finished. When following scripts, this means you can edit whilst recording and not have to return to look for takes and false starts - you are also less likely to have to call the presenter back in!
Since SADiE is 100% non-destructive any 'rough' edits you make at this stage can very easily and quickly be 'trimmed' at a later stage without the fear of destroying anything; this is also true of course when passing the project onto anyone else.
How do I set this up?
There is nothing to set up! As long as your stream controls are set to 'show profiles' (this can be done with each stream or 'globally' with the profile button at the top left of the stream controls), the profiles will 'draw' themselves as you record. When you cut with the razor icon you will have cut the clip 'live' whilst recording. You can also, and perhaps more easily, use the 'scissors' - click the icon and your mouse turns into a pair of scissors allowing you to cut any of the audio you have on screen, including what you have just recorded; you can clearly see in the waveform where the cuts should be. Then you can delete clips or rename them or move them to other streams (use CTRL & up/down arrow moves selected clip up/down a stream). It will probably help to turn Slip off so that other clips (including the one you are still recording) don't move.
Recording multiple takes. If you are recording a book reading or voice-over and you are doing this in sync whilst listening to the output of SADiE (remember there is also no latency in SADiE so this is possible), you can simply double-click just before the recording to immediately hear it back. You can also keep 'dropping-in' new takes over the previous ones; this doesn't destroy the original takes, but sends them to the background of the same stream, in sync. Having done this a few times you can the right-click over the section in question and bring a particular take to the foreground. If you cut up the clip further you can right-click again and build up the completed edit from a variety of takes until it's perfect!
