Fluid Mastering order a second PCM system
April 2008 - Cambridge, UK: Within days of learning that Prism Sound had acquired the business and intellectual property rights of SADiE, Fluid Mastering in West London felt sufficiently confident in the on-going success of the product line to place an order for a new SADiE PCM-4 desktop mastering editor. The mastering facility, which was set up in 2006 by former Townhouse mastering engineers Tim Debney and Nick Watson, already has a SADiE PCM-8M digital audio workstation operating in its main studio, but needed a second system in its smaller editing suite to handle compilations.
"We were certainly in the market for a second SADiE system but when we learned that the company was in financial difficulties we put our plans on hold," Debney says. "However, the news that Prism Sound has acquired SADiE changed everything and we placed an order straight away. We've been SADiE users for years and by choice wouldn't have any other system. Knowing that Prism Sound was now behind the product gave us to confidence to move forward with our plans for our edit suite."
Prism Sound is now manufacturing new SADiE units in order to re-establish stock levels. Fluid Mastering's PCM4M, which will be delivered in May, will be one of the first units to roll off Prism Sound's production line.
Designed specifically for mastering purposes, the PCM-4M is a 4 input/4 output SADiE system running full SADiE 5 software. Based on the PCM-4, it is supplied configured with the additional CD Mastering Package, which includes the Red Book mastering option, DDP, Mastering Limiter, Hi-Dither, PQ-list print, etc.
In hardware terms the PCM-4M comprises a PCI plug in card and provides 4 channels of balanced line input and output as well as digital I/O (AES/EBU). The I/O is accomplished by cable looms which convert the D-type connectors on the rear of the PCI plug in card to traditional male and female XLR connectors. The system supports all audio formats up to 96kHz/24bit.
Fluid Mastering is a state-of-the-art facility that caters for every style of music, from esoteric Jazz and Folk through to chart topping Pop, Dance and Rock. Debney and Watson have over 25 years experience between them. They have used this formidable knowledge base to build a mastering facility that combines major-studio experience and superior technical facilities with a streamlined cost-effective business approach.
"Our ethos is to provide clients with a flexible and adaptable service that truly meets their needs," Debney adds. "As well as handling projects from all of the major record labels, our thriving customer base also comprises independent record labels, individual artists, producers and songwriters who all want access to the reliable and professional service we provide."
The services on offer include CD Mastering, Mastering for Download, Vinyl Cutting, Re-Mastering, Editing and Restoration. Located at Ravenscourt Studios in Hammersmith, Fluid Mastering also acts as a conduit for other music industry professionals as it sub-lets studio and office space to composers and artist managers.
